Crime rates 'can affect insurance premiums'

The rate of criminal activity in an area can have a serious impact on the price of home insurance premiums, according to a leading mutual society.

Liverpool Victoria's spokesperson, Emma Holyer, said the likelihood of burglary is one of many factors that can affect the cost of a homeowner's contents premium.

However, she added that it is vital people living in higher risk areas, including urban city areas, take out cover.

Ms Holyer also pointed out that consumers should take other steps to protect their belongings.

"If you do live in an area where there is high crime and high theft rates, there's various steps you can take, such as taking extra security precautions and putting deadlocks on your doors."

The British Crime Survey claims that 733,000 domestic burglaries took place between 2005 and 2006.

In addition, the research stated that the number of domestic burglaries in England and Wales peaked in the mid-1990s, before falling by almost 60 per cent between 1995 and 2005.ADNFCR-1054-ID-18383652-ADNFCR
